Flashing Lights......Any Teachers Out There?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am a teacher and they have to warn me when they are having any kind of drill. I find it unbelievable to know that schools have an alarm system with flashing strobe lights in a building full of kids and knowing that at the very least, 20 kids in the building have a seizure disorder. Any other opinions?

I am a transitional substitute teacher with PSE. I am placed with autistic students that are on the spectrum so that I can help them and their teachers learn how to cope with and recognize different seizures within their classrooms. Karen is correct. I had one student whose trigger was loud noises. I had to recommend his parents get him a pair of shooters electronic earplugs. The earplugs only cancel out noise above a certain decibel. Below that decibel level they act as hearing aids.

Not all seizures are triggered by flashing lights. Can you find out if any of those children have that as a trigger? Perhaps find a plan to work with the person organizing the drill to lesson the impact on those students.
