As Bryan explains, if you listen to his pod cast, there are a lot of reasons (unfortunately the most frequent is unknown) of why an individual of any age develops Epilepsy.

Not to mention, even if there is some genetic history of epilepsy in the family, it does not mean that everyone in the family will get epilepsy -- just like a lot of other conditions. I have 4 cousins that have the same genetic pool as my siblings and I (my mom and my aunt are sisters and they married my father and his brother), thus we share all of the same cousins. However, none of them or my 6 siblings have been diagnosed with epilepsy and the same goes for all of the children of my siblings and this group of cousins.

a lotta questions.... (inhariting epilepsy from birth to age 40) if 1 parent has seizures and the other parent is not... the chances the kid has seizures are 5% or lower. both parents have seizures... the kid will get more than 5% of having seizures. if you have idiopathic seizures... the chances the kid will have seizures are 9-12%. if both parents have idiopathic... the chance are more than 12%.
then you have genetic vs non gentics. if you only have seizures.... the chance that the kid will have seizures are slim to none. if a family member has it and you have it... the chances the kid has seizures are around 5% or higher (depending on the parent thing above.

It's a good possibility according to my team of doctors. When they looked at my family history, they found 3 generations back, someone in my family had a seizure disorder. Crazy I know. This is why my son refuses to have children. He says he will adopt.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , My Dad began having seizures after my parents were married but they never knew why. He had bad grand mal seizures. I’m 44 & I’ve had seizures since the 2nd grade after hitting my head on the monkey bars but no one knows for sure if I got them from that, my Dad or both. Growing up I had petit mal seizures, now known as absence seizures but now I have partial seizures & nocturnal seizures where I have seizures in my sleep. My Mom said my older brother had a few seizures when he was real young but they stopped & when one of his daughters was born she began having seizures but they didn’t last to long cause they soon stopped. I think there’s a few others on here with Epilepsy in their family. Here’s a link to an article on the topic that you can also find by clicking on where it says “Resources” & scroll through the different articles till you find it but hopefully this link will go through.
