Which Epilepsy Medication Causes Weak Bones
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 40 year old daughter with epilepsy broke her leg last year and they are taking her off sodium valproate as they think this has caused her fragile bones but unfortunately this is causing her to have more seizures

To clarify, by touchstones i mean things that comfort and make her happy. Acivities that have the same effect i also consinder “touchstones” they’re a tangible reminder but something with personal and therefore comorting value. Such as i often play a guitar i’ve been dragging around for thirty years that my grandmother got me for my fifteenth birthday. It’s comforting, it feels like a hug from 1,600 miles away and reminds me how strong and long lived my great grandmother lived quietly with epilepsy. That’s just me, but there are other things too, even sharpening my favorite knife (i’m a chef), sometimes is calming to me. Everyone has something, knitting, carving, beading, writing, baking. Something that settles them.

I had a compression fracture in 2017 and I had to get an MRI it turns out that I fractured the rib cage and some of the disks of the vertebrae had been slowly going. Ask if he is willing to prescribe you Vit D with Calcium, that way you can get the nutrients you need and get your bones intact.

They can affect Vitamin D levels in the blood - necessary for calcium to be absorbed into the blood. I get asked by my neuro each time I see him if I am taking Vitamin D. Ask for a vitamin D level when she has her next blood test. Mine has tested low and am taking 5000 iu (prescribed by my doctor) every day.

It seems to me that the seizure control should have top priority! It only increases the likelihood of injuries when the seizures are uncontrolled. I think there are a lot of epilepsy medications that affect calcium absorption, with bad effects on bone density, including some I’m on. And I am at the age where I worry about osteoporosis. But the only thing we can do is to take Calcium and vitamin D, along with a multivitamin, and stay active including some exercise. I come up short on that last part, but I try to remember to take my vitamins!

In the same position, I might ask the doctor about the dangers of seizure’s effects if I fall, upon my bones, too. But that’s just me. It’s your choice…
