Contemplating Surgery
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

As I wait for the epileptologist to contact me about my options for surgery, I am contemplating whether or not to have it. I had simple partial seizures that have now evolved into complex partial seizures. They have determined the location of where the seizure originates. At 44, listening to some podcasts about the recovery process of surgery makes me wonder if it would just be easier to continue with the seizures, though the epileptologist warn me that they would get worse over time. Though I… read more

Yea, I am all over this. I didn’t want to not have surgery and wonder what if, so I had a resection in 2012 and it went down hill after. I spoke with a friend and he is very well. No seizures and still works at Yankee Stadium as security. I definitely am happy for him and wonder why didn’t it work out for me. I always say “God knows why”. I’m learning to let go and how ever long I have to WAIT, I am learning things about myself in the PROCESS. That’s what it is.

i have surgery... a left hemiphereexamy (left brain is disconnected and a cig box size removed. note this is not the worst of the worst but it is pretty bad.
my right is less than the left. my hand is going nothing and i have a foot brace. my leg swings from time to time. i have to do therapy for a couple of months outa the year... every 1-3 years. onto the speach. my brain cant compute more 3-5 things at one time. my what i think and what i say is a 1-2 sec delay. (excuse my french) i cant spell and/or say with a damn (the tip of the tongue). and sometimes i speek the yoda speek (speek mid, end, then begining).
and i still have seizures. mind you i have 4 types pre surgery and now i am 1-2 types but still.
note... this was before lazer surgery and advancements in vns. so do this with a grain. but i could not find a job. i finally found a part time job. problem was i have ssdi so i can make a certen amount. if i make x amout or higher... thay will cut my ssi money. i have to make hundreds of dollars per hour to brake even or a part time job. but that is my ssi thing. results may vary.
my advice... if you tryed everything (including alternative meds) with no help... then try the surgery. if not, try at least 1-2 alternative meds. my i suggest weed (cbd with or without the thc) and/or a high fat low carb diet (like keto or atkins).

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member my first surgery was technically a failure. I was crushed emotionally. It was so hard.
I am sorry for you have you gotten any other relief? Have you talked to the doctors about going after it again?
The doctors determined in my case they must have missed just a small amount of tissue but once they went back in they found that a significant amount of tissue had become active that wasn't active during my first surgery. I am so glad we pushed through. Seizure free coming up on a year now.

I can tell you Surgery doesn’t always help! I had Surgery 2x and it didn’t help! I got a new Dr and she
recommended a VNS I tried everything else so I said fine! In the first 6 mons. My seizures went down
50% they tweaked it a couple more times …. I still have to take meds with it but now I’m seizure free
For the 3 years since it started when I was 21 due to a brain tumor! I’m going back in in a couple was
to get a new battery! I’m 72 it’s also covered by Medicare when you get older! (I made sure before I decided to do this!)

I am a candidate for a implant. In November of 2022 they attached electrodes to my skull. I was in the hospital for about two weeks. I’ve had EEG’s, MRI’s, Cat scans and other tests. I’m not even sure when this implant will take place. I live in Maryland where cannabis is now legal. I feel like it would be easier to get the cannabis. I also have anxiety which makes me think that my neurologist and neurosurgeon are forgetting about my needs. They said that they just need approval. When the surgery does happen I will still get it done. Good luck and have a great day!
