During a pleasant, perfect late spring bike ride in 2011 (I've biked regularly since age 25) on a great well-known trail, my vision suddenly turned weird. All the beautiful colors of late spring turned suddenly to only 2 colors - red and gold. It stayed that way for about 10 minutes as I slowly biked along the trail. Normal vision then returned. In subsequent weeks other events occurred. I lost the ability to speak properly for 1-2 minutes and the ability to write down simple words in English. I… read more
Hi Annie7
My epilepsy is not genetically caused. The experts say genetics 1) starts latest in life in 20s; 2) there are MORE than 12 different gene disorders that cause epilepsy; 3) genetics explain about 30-40 percent of all epilepsy; 4) brain injuries are another BIG cause of epilepsy; 5) another 5-6 causes ( brain injury at birth, drug & alcohol problems encephalitis, etc account for the rest.
Well, you have my curiosity now. I've had epilepsy since I was three years old. I had the surgery 22 years ago. From the scar tissue, they were able to tell me it was from the 105 fever I had when I was three. I'd ask around and see if someone could answer your question.
I was classified as "reason unknown" for 55 years, until I started with a new neurologist (one in Boston rather that Southeastern Massachusetts), and I had my first of all of these: 2 brain MRIs, Pet Scan and MEG in addition to EEGs and spending a week in EEG Long Term Monitoring. With all the information they gathered, my neurologist explained to me that my Epilepsy began when I was a newborn and had my first febrile seizures. At the age of 5 (if not before) febrile seizures end. My epilepsy went into a dormant state while transforming to another form of seizures to appear later in life usually puberty).
This and the other detains they explained that I have Epilepsy from genetics.
KaraC,
Yes they still have lots to learn about Epilepsy. About 2,400 yrs ago, Hippocrates, the ancient Greek doctor, spoke accurately about Epilepsy when he labelled it as a brain disorder. He translated extremely old Hieroglyphics, thousands of yrs older than him, that discussed Epilepsy. And BTW - people that have played football, hockey, etc are developing brain disorders after they reach middle age. Since my 4 brothers and my sister never got Epilepsy, plus never played any sports, my thoughts have focussed on a high school football injury. Take care, keep the faith and help raise Epilepsy awareness. Too many people get Epilepsy every yr. The official medical guess is 2 1/2 to 5 million people annually.
Hi Anwar,
Not driving? Good idea until you reach about 1 yr of no seizures. These rules vary in different countries but I'm glad I waited. Driving now. Next - so important to find some new friends. Get out to have a coffee or share emails. Great to speak with others. Does an Epilepsy group exist in your area? When Epilepsy enters ones life it is a challenging enemy to fight. But a very important strategy is to not do it alone. Meet others, develop new friends and don't fight Epilepsy alone. My very best wishes to achieve success one step at a time.
