A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

So surgery is in less than 7 hrs. And im stressed and scared. How can i unwind and just calm myself. I just dont want nothing bad to happen. Ive been through 2 surgeried before but was not THIS scared for them. I dont know if its because this time its a craniotomy and hefore it was just small pin holes. But im just so scared. 🤕

Hi, first of all I want to wish you the best of luck! I've had brain surgery twice and both of them being a craniotomy. The first time, I was scared out of my mind, the second time, I think my family was more concerned than me. My tip is find what keeps you calm and distracted. For me it was music and I wish I had that with me during my first surgery.

Listen to calm soft music. If you have one of those devices the play white noise sounds, like Rain, Thunder, Waterfall or River and ect. When my kids were little it helped relax them at bedtime.

Positive calming affirmations are helpful, I did that to calm my mind and helped me not to freak out when I was having my first surgery ever for something different.
The thought of brain surgery for me is terrifying so i can imagine how your feeling.

Sorry that I was not up and awake to answer that question, but 11 hours ago is 5 in the morning in Massachusetts!

I was/am praying for you (started with prayers when you said the surgery was coming up today).

My maternal grandmother was actually cracking jokes while in the ER on the last hours of her life to help calm the doctors and nurses working hard to see if they could do anything to save her. I have no idea if my mom was in the room out of the way or some member of the team told her after she had died, but she told us. I was in 7th grade when she died. She had advanced diabetes II to the point that she was almost completely blind, but she was a big influence on the first 5 of us. My youngest 2 siblings were sisters born in 1976 and 1978, Just like I have no memories of grandmother who died of cancer when I was 3.
