Hormone Therapy With Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Im apart of the trans community, and am wanting to take testosterone therapy. I havent said anything to my doctors yet, slightly out of fear, but i want to know if theres even a possibility of being able to before i go to them. Is there anyone else who is doing hormone therapy while having epilepsy? Any interqctions between the hormone medications and the anti seizure medications? Any seizure increase with it? I can only give you my biological experience as a woman. I can say a drop in my estrogen levels would cause a lot of my seizures, and going through menopause was a nightmare. I would definitely approach my neurologist before anyone else because you have to keep the seizures in check before anything can work. I don’t know much more than that, but any fluctuation in hormones can be a seizure trigger. I wish you good luck with with whatever you decide! Stay seizure free…

It's worth asking your neurologist. They are professionals and won't judge you, if that's what you're afraid of. If you do feel like they're judging you, then find a new doctor :) Your team has most likely worked with trans epileptic patients, but I would ask them if they do.

As far as hormones go, they can effect your seizure threshold. I don't know much at all about hormone therapy, but I'm sure your doctors can adjust your medications if need be. If they say that hormone therapy is not an option, I would get a second opinion to be sure.

Good luck!!
