Has Anyone Been Pregnant And Dealt With Seizures?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have grand mal seizures and recently found out that im pregnant. But im worried about the effects it might have. I wanted a first person point of view in dealing with a pregnancy along with dealing with epilepsy.

I have Grand Mal seizures and have been pregnant twice. I didn't have any seizures or other issues with my Epilepsy. I took my medicine, vitamins and saw Drs regularly, I did have more appointments than most women but I was blessed to be even healthier in pregnancy than usual.

I do not have grand mal specifically, but im on 3 different meds. One was not fully "tested" if it was safe or not at the time (vimpat in 2018) but the docs just checked my meds adjusted them as needed, they actually went up cause my pregnancy made my seizures worse. And if they feel its safer for you and baby, they might induce you or maybe worst case c section? I was induced at 37 weeks just for safety concerns.

No worries most AED meds are quite safe. Dr will make sure yours are too. Back in 1980s there weren't many choices but not now. Had a few severe seizures but they did not hurt the child at all. Meds for say heart probs won't even allow a pregnancy but not modern day ones for epilepsy.

First thing you do is go straight to see your neurology consultant. If you’re on medication for your epilepsy then you may need to be weaned off certain medications as certain medications or high doses can have serious and severe side-effects to a baby and having seizures while pregnant can deprive the baby of getting any oxygen. Me and my partner have spent over two years preparing to have a baby so please go see your doctor
