How Do You Know If Your Making The Right Decisions With Your Medical Care?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Cutting the long story short I was told by my gynecologist I would definitely need surgery to remove an endometriosis nodule in my rectum but upon a consultation today with a colorectal surgeon she advised that i dont need surgery just treatment to suppress the endrometriosis with hormones and that the surgery decesion relies heavily on the gynecologist requesting it and that she has to arrange the surgery on her end.

The thing is my gynecologist wants me to have the surgery but I really don't… read more

Hi Nada--I have made terrible decisions in the past when mis-diagnosed by the medical society and the providers leaving paying exhorbitant bills. I think a second opinion might be a good thing for you?

With the surgery it is not enough percentage wise that you will be better and they are not for sure either they the Doctors should quit it is just a money game in the first place. I think once you get to a certain age your on your own from there.

Hi nada, short story. About 10 yrs ago I found a breast lump ( at ten minutes of five on a Friday, of course. The longest wknd of my life. I was so freaked out, I wanted to go to the ER.) I did the mammogram, the ultrasound and a biopsy. My doctor sent me to a surgeon who saw all the tests and felt it, a little longer than necessary
He gave me the option... You can leave it there and do nothing, just know it's there OR we can remove it. My choice.. I went home and mulled it around
My personal view, I had it removed. Just knowing it was there would drive me nuts wondering. I'd always be thinking. Is it bigger ? Has it moved ? Could it be cancer now ? It feels different. What's this.... What's that ? Has it changed ? I made the choice to remove it. Knowing their was a lump or growth in my body that's not supposed to be there had to come out. I had to eliminate that lump from becoming cancerous.. just one less concern. I would have walked my way into having a seizure. Mine are brought on by stress 😬

I totally agree John. I have quit going to neurologists for now. We have to take charge and modify our meds according to our own response both physically and emotionally. I have blood draws semi-annually to make sure my keppra XR is at the therapeutic level. It's been successful except for an over sedation by our local hospital seven months back.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member This is why the final decision is yours (the patient). You can have the professional advice of your doctors, seek other professional advice from other doctors, and seek the advice from family and friends especially from those who have had a similar decision to make. However, you are the one who has to live with the results of what is done.

On December 1st, when I next meet with my neurologist, I am going to hear the recommendations (long and short terms) from the Brigham and Women's Hospital committee of the entire neurology department and other doctors whose input is important to determining the best plan, but regardless of all of the experts recommend, the final decision about what is done is mine alone.
