Does Surgery Make The Seizures Go Away Fully?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been epileptic since I was about 7 years old and am now 27 years old and feel like this past year has been one of the worst when it comes to the amount of seizures I’ve had
At the beginning of 2019, my doctor and I decided to try a new medication called Lamotragine and slowly take me off the older medication carbamezapine as I wasn’t fully under control. While I was on the carbamezapine I would have about 1 seizure/year and it was durable and livrable. We decided to lean another… read more

Your welcome @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member .

About 20years ago I had brain surgery . Overall it went well . They had to be cautious, because my seizures are in around and near my speech, language and memory centers. They were able to remove a good amount. I still have seizures, but my seizure frequency reduced from severe to mild and moderate seizures.

The surgeries just help possibly becoming seizures free . That’s no guarantee. It can also help reduce your seizure frequency and have a possible chance of seizure control. Maybe less meds. No matter how your surgery turns out you’ll still have to stay on your meds

I was on several medications from 1998 to 2012. They helped but never stopped the seizures. I would have one day a month of seizures. My neurologist often suggested surgery. In 2012 my seizures got worse so I decided to look into brain surgery. I had scar tissue on my brain. I had to go and have testing done to see if my seizures were coming from that part of my brain and they were. So on December 26, 2012 I had brain surgery. I was on 5 seizure medicines. After a year of being seizure free the doctor slowly started taking me off some of my meds. He told me he wanted to keep me on 1 med to be on the safe side, because it could be the surgery that stoped my seizures or the combination of meds and the surgery. It has been 7 years and I am still seizure free. I think at least looking into the surgery and seeing if that is a even an option for you might be a good first step.

Thank you for all the detailed responses :) very useful and it will really give me a better perspective of what to expect and gives me ideas on what questions to ask my doctor before committing to anything!

I did have a right lobectomy surgery done in Dec. 2012. As of June 2013. I've been Seizure Free! I was having seizures since I was 6 months old. Had my surgery done. 11 days before my 40th birthday. 🙂 It was a hard decision to make. But, I'm happy not having any seizures since my surgery. Having seizures weekly. Wasn't fun to experience.
