Who's Now Driving After Having Brain Surgery?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Portsmouth, UK

Does it feel any different than before?
I'm weighing up saying "yes" to the surgeon and I'm just thinking about all forms of life after having the surgery. I.e. The effects the surgery will have on me, and driving and a big one. As up until 5 years ago I was driving, so I really want to get back on the roads!
Just didn't know if surgery would change any sensations/reaction times etc for driving.

I didn't have my license prior to surgery, but after surgery I didn't have any side effects holding me back. I went just shy of 20yrs before having another seizure. Now they're just in my sleep so I'm still driving and working.

I drove again after surgery but it was 3 years after as had to be seizure free for a year. Lost it again 2 years later after more seizures (as you'll know probably brought on by work-very poor support & treatment which needn't be a problem with you?) Hoping to get it back again next Christmas. Have to avoid a lot of alcohol & very late nights (last one before had been my 50th party last May) it was very different when I was younger. I was told after surgery! that it wasn't necessarily to stop fits but to reduce severity (they were awful long lasting fits then with terrible effects afterwards) they are much less severe now but I have to control them myself by having little stress, alcohol & tiredness. I hardly had any when I was younger & drove for years. Also, you don't have to take a test again.
The moral of the story is you're young, less damage to the brain than when you're older ( I was told that but it may be better to check before op with dr/nurse) so better chance of less scarring afterwards which can lead to fits. You can choose re stress with your job at the mo. Be careful for the first 2 years after op. I was told they don't know full result till 18-24 months after surgery. You may have your licence back by then? End of essay πŸ˜‰ good luck xx

I was fine during time of having licence after op till stress at work. Could have alcohol back then. Just got worse as more fits in later years that could have been avoided. Different place of work now. Potential you could get licence back with no further problems xx

number 1 u are going in for a surgery, first ask what might happen after a surgery, 2 things can happen, yes u can be seizure free, and no still have seizure and will not be able to drive. My brother went in for surgery to see if he can drive again, and no he still as seizure, He should of never went in for surgery just to see if he could get drive again. do not know what kind of seizure u have. but we all like to drive, but driving and might have seizure need to think of what might happen, that was my twin, they want to know if i want to have surgery. I said NO WAY. think of what might happen !!!!!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member yeah that was another query actually, how long after surgery do the DVLA say not to drive for. I knew about the seizure free for a year think already. Guess I'll have to make a phone call! Thanks!
