Vagus Nervw Stimulator
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just got my vagus nerve stimulator operation. Can anyone tell me if it works for them/side effects/what I can expect?

It works great for me, I still have to take my meds. After you get the operation done, you will feel your voice gets higher than normal when you talk for the first time but that's normal. Your doctor will probably test it out on you the next time you see the doctor. He or she will have you speak, and if you sound like a bird or higher, that's the vns getting adjusted to you. I freaked out the first time I spoke and she said its normal. Once you get adjusted to it, and they set it to the right settings. You might feel it go off for the first few weeks or months, but once you get used to it u won't feel it at all or as often. The doctor will explain it to you.

I'm now 4 weeks post op from VNS...had it turned on 2 weeks ago. So far no problems. I had laryngitis for 2 weeks, but I honestly think it was from surgical swelling. It's better now. VNS was turned on and I've been at .25 setting and doing ok. Can't really tell its there. I've needed to use the magnet once and for whatever reason it didn't go off. Also, I've accidentally set it off twice...lol...my new magnet friend and I are trying to get to know each other. Its all a learning process. I'm getting it turned up to .50 today. We'll see how this progresses!

Did you ever have it done? I didn't lose my voice until later in the adjustments so it wasn't right away. I also only lose it when it stimulates. Can't remember what the settings were but it was off for 60 seconds (and voice would be fine) then on for 30 seconds (and I would sound like I had laryngitis). It comes with a magnet though that allows you to overstimulate to stop a seizure but it also allows you turn it off for a short period of time (like during public speaking or if you have to make an important phone call). Again, my settings were definitely above the norm and my voice issues didn't start until later in the programming. My neuro told me it was just temporary and my voice would come back but it never did. I just had my battery replaced so it's still turned down low. Not sure if I will get it turned back up higher again or where I will go up to this time.

Have you ever heard of anyone permanently losing their voice from this? I saw it written a couple of places, I believe it said itmrarelynhappens...but trust me when I say if there is less than a 1% chance of something happening, I will be that person! My neuro thinks I should have it done, but I'm very anxious about it.
