Is There A Connection Between Shingles And Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just wondered if Epilepsy could have increased my chances of getting Shingles seeing that they are both nervous system / brain related. I noticed a burny itchy spot in my cheek a few days ago. Its getting bigger. The rest of my right side of my face started itching too. And the back of my neck and down my back. So walked into the pharmacy today after church to get an antihistamine for this strange "allergy" I have. And the pharmacist told me it's not an allergy. IT'S SHINGLES! No wonder I've… read more

I got Shingles at any age. We just don't recognize it some patients go to the ER for terrific itchiness and pain and out the next day. Medication can be given to subtle the symptoms by your Dr.

I just posted a question about this same thing. Although I had shingles once at 9 years old then again at 17, but I didn’t have my first seizure until I was 25 and had another at age 27. Shingles can cause neurological issues, but from the research I’ve done it seems more likely to have a stroke than seizures because of it. I doubt shingles can be caused from seizures, because it is a virus that lies dormant in your body after being exposed to chicken pox and can reoccure at any time in your life, but usually when your immune system is lowered or you are under severe stress. I don’t believe that’s always the case because I was a very healthy child when I got them and I wasn’t under any stress at those times. Unfortunately there really isn’t much information on shingles and the neurological effects it may cause.

I am having shingles on my right side right now. I also had them when I was a teenager. I've had three seizures since I've been aware of the shingles on my back..I feel really out of it and hurting. I'm concerned about more serious side affects that could come with this combination. I'm not sure what to do.

I tend to always have bad shingles breakouts on right backside within hours or days of seizure activity. The two are definitely related for me...
