Can't Concentrate And Am So Sleepy When I Try.
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Have trouble feeling awake all day long. I mostly get my seizures when I am sleeping. And can tell when I have had one, I wake up no energy and sometimes very week muscles. I love to quilt but I just sit there as though I am in another world. Can't concentrate. I take Klonipin and Gabapentin. I sometimes feel like I am losing my mind. I have only been diagnosed for about 3 years and that was a slow process and I had doctors that did not believe I was sick. If anyone has any ideas, I would… read more

if your doctor does blood work they should know if your levels are at the right amount. If this has been going on for a long time then maybe you should try and talk to your doctor about trying something else for your meds. I know when i have mine i come out of it and im very tired and my body hurts. the only thing i want to do is sleep. I will sleep for hours and not wanting to be bothered with. See if your doctor will do another 24 hour eeg and a mri. I hope they find something that works for you. best of luck

Travis, I started studying the brain and nervous system in 1980 at a University in So Cal. In my early 20's I learned so much that it shocked my professors. I knew things they didn't even know or understand. I know so much it confuses Specialists in every field of medicine. I haven't met an Epileptologist yet but I know I would confuse them too. The things I know cannot be found in a book or on the internet and even if I explain it to them they could never truly understand it. I would be teaching them things I've known for 35 to 38 years and it would be totally new them. I've seen the look on Specialists faces when I've told them some things and they can't explain it. I have read books at there level so I understand them and what they are saying but when I talk about something not in a book they are stumped.

A lot of the drugs cause symptoms like you mentioned...It can be a craps shoot. I take the gabapentin for nerve pains...low dose compared to a dose that would be used for epilepsy (I'm on 1800/day). Not sure what is available in your region, but look for a neurologist who is also an epileptologist (epilepsy focus training). Search for an epilepsy clinic rather than general neurology.

My suggestion is to get a second opinion from a different doctor. Neurontin makes some people feel out of it depends on the dosage and clonpin is a benzodiazepine which naturally slows the mind down. I personally have not seen good things from either drug. Try to get on something different if possible.

One thing you might not want to hear is that Gabapentin(Neurotin) can take the calcium from you bones. Many years ago a Neurologist told me that and it was something he had found out that it did. He told me after I told him I was taking it and he also said it was one of the weaker anti-epileptic medicines. He said it could lead to early onset of osteoporosis in men and women. From what you wrote you are having nocturnal tonic clonic seizures, those can really wear you out and make you tired all day and to compound that with the medicine you are taking that will make you even more tired. These medications are so powerful and have so many side affects it takes a real toll on you.
