Sleep Only Related Forms Of Epilepsy And Misjudged By Others?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been discriminated on many occasions due to people blanketing us all under one diagnosis. That being diagnosed as an epileptic.

I have yet again been classified as unsafe whilst being assessed in a medical where the assessment team claimed even though my recent seizure which was two mornings before and again it was whilst asleep I am now supposedly not safe to work or drive.

They did not even know that the UKs sleep epilepsy laws and rights are totally different for sleep epilepsy… read more

I completely understand what you are going through. I have gone through it many times. Last time I was working for a company that discriminated against me and did not believe me that I had seizures as they were not visible to others. I tend not to tell my employers unless I feel it is necessary. That workplace was toxic, and thankfully my mum is a lawyer and was able to get me paid out of my contract as they were causing me so much stress it was affecting my health and mental health! My manager wanted to talk to my doctor to get my medical information which is highly illegal and unethical in so many ways. I eventually got paid out and never looked back.

Well first in the UK if we are proven sleep only we do not have to surrender our drivers license if we keep suffering seizures as long as they are all sleep related.
As our seizures are only sleep related we are not an awake related daytime risk when in the workplace.
The lady carrying out the medical on me tried to accuse me of not being safe to work or drive as I had suffered a seizure two mornings before at 4.10 whilst asleep. The driving rules might be similar across the world but it’s surprising how many professional people even Occupational Health don’t know these differences.

I struggle with Insomnia because of my Epilepsy . I had this trouble since K-12 school. It’s bad today, but I do use to my advantage.
