Understanding What Type Seizure
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am interested in anyone possibly knowing what type of seizure would cause what I guess is an aura. I feel really weird before it happens. My body starts tingling. I start feeling disoriented. Like I’m going to pass out. But during my last seizure I didn’t fully lose consciousness. But I was having convulsions my body was tightening. I felt out of body
I couldn’t control it. I remember bits and pieces. But was told what else occurred. There was a lot of confusion after. I couldn’t speak I was… read more

I don’t get the type of seizures that you get.
But, when I get my aura’s. I begin to get these frightening feeling like something bad is going to happen. I had told my doctor about this feeling. She never had anything to say about it. Family told me that those feelings could be panic attacks.
It was not until I changed doctors and I told him about these feelings that I get. He explained to me those feelings are called aura’s. Those aura’s let me know that a seizure might be coming.
I was shown a breathing exercise to do when I get those aura’s and it helps me out.
Most of the time I do get an aura before my seizures and I can prepare myself for it. I’m thankful for the breathing exercise. I get fewer seizures since I was shown the breathing exercise

Joanna, great to hear that you are doing daily meditation! When I was able to (and hope that my neuropsychologist is correct that when I get my anxiety disorder back under control I will have the benefit of meditation back again) meditate it not only allowed me to calm and get to sleep (avoiding insomnia because it got my mind to relax and stop going into trouble solving mode, thus allowing me to be tired and sleep), but it is also a major aid in keeping down stress levels and releasing some negative emotions which in turn helps reduce the chances of triggering seizures by stress, anxiety and sleep deprivation. The other triggers will still be there, but this trio are some of the primary triggers for seizures.

Keep up with the meditation!

The aura is helpful if you are having them before the seizures.

Here are the details on them from the Epilepsy Foundation with regards to the Focal Onset Impaired Awareness (Complex Partial) seizures where technically the aura is a Focal Onset Aware (Simple Partial) seizure. In my case, the only time that I get an aura is before the Focal Onset Aware (Simple Partial) seizures -- in this case the Focal Onset Aware seizure is just an expansion on the aura.
