How Often Do You Increase Your Medication?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

It appears every 3-6 months my seizures become out of control again and I need to increase my medication. Things will go well for a bit and then get out of control again and a dose increase will temporarily help. Is this normal? Does this happen to you guys? Im on tegretol, vimpat, and clobazam.

It different for all of us. Increasing your med dosages, has to do with your blood levels, after they draw your blood. When your levels are low, your Dr. Will increase your meds. If your medication levels keep low the Dr. Will increases your meds a little more. When the meds dosage reach the max due to your weight, then it’s time to change to a different brand medication.

Is the neurologist doing blood tests with each of these increases? If you have too much of the anticonvulsant in your blood stream, it can trigger seizures. I know because this happened to me in the summer of 2003 and in late spring 2005.

Hello… I used to have a similar problem, until my doctor found the right combination of medicines to get control of the abnormal brain waves (which is what epilepsy is). Now, I have had basic control for a number of years, but at any time that could change. So I have to be very careful about what I eat and drink, and how much activity I get (I need to get more). So in my experience, it’s common for a person to become accustomed to a dose. But there are limitations to how much of a particular drug someone can take before it becomes toxic to the body. So it’s a delicate balance, if you ask me… I wish you all the best in your treatment

"So far so good" as in just none of the immediate side effects or Keppra, or are you in a long-term seizure free state?

I was getting my blood tested once a yr, it had been 6 yrs since a seizure. I had a couple in January the put me in the emergency room. I was pit on Keppra in the hospital since I had another seizure in the hospital. My doc has been trying to get me off Keppra. When I had my most seizures in January I was only taking 375mg Keppra once a day in the morn. Since then I'm taking 375 rice and so far so good.
