Relationships And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question đź’

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to maintain a relationship while having epilepsy? I'm 37 and feel so alone. I've tried dating, and in the last 10 years have had no success because of my epilepsy. My partner's often would think I was lying about not being able to remember things. They think I'm using it as an excuse or making it up to get sympathy. I don't know how to explain my condition to them. I've tried to get them to go to doctor visits with me so a neurologist could explain it but… read more

Most of my past relationships, have already knew as friends. There were also a couple I met through friends. They all knew and were warned, about my Epilepsy.
Before I ever went to deep, into any relationship I would let them know of my condition. Try and explain the many basic symptoms and side effects from my Epilepsy. I want them to not just get to know me but understand my condition. If they can’t handle my seizures, along with the package that comes with it. They need to decide if they can handle my situation. I don’t want this to turn into a heartbreak .I want to stay prepared and watch for signs on whether or not the person is pulling away or not. It’s not worth to continue, if that’s what’s happening. Better off ending it, before coming fully emotionally attached.

I dumped a Guy i was dating a year ago he wasn't a nice person, he would freak out whenever I would have a seizure and wasn't the most calm person when it happened I remember I had a seizure in his car he speed through traffic we nearly had a accident because he was freaking out so much I'm like thinking to myself why are you freaking out it's happening to me I'm the one going through the scary shit.

Maybe I'm harsh and probably expected to much when we first started dating I didn't have these seizures so I guess he didn't know how to handle it but if the tables were turned I would ask him how do you want me to respond to you when it happens because I know I don't want anyone coming near me when I get one or don't call the ambulance . I like calming words said to me when I'm going through one and sometimes a massage on my hands definitely don't try to talk to me my mum does and wonders why I don't answer her at times 🤦‍♀️sometimes I can talk but it's a definite struggle to.
Dating right now isn't a priority for me I find relationships stressful, I think the right person will handle your situation the ones that run aren't for you or date someone who has epilepsy aswell who better to understand what your going through.

You have people here and if all else fails, drop me a line.
Ive tried the dating game and as soon as anyone hears about my medical history or the fact i collect disability as a primary resource, or dont drive, they bolt.
I would like to talk to you about your seizures if your open to it. Sounds like their out of control.

Difficult one for me to answer I met my husband she. We were ,18 & I was 21 when I was first diagnosed. Things weren't too bad epilepsy wise at first so he able to travel around for world with his work .My seizures changed in type ,& frequency .He's stood by me throughout ,it's our ruby wedding in ,2022.He's very supportive but at times gets very frustrated as I have uncontrolled partial seizures & absences, in clusters with very bad post ictal confusion ,lasting for hours.Unless you're experiencing this ,as we are even those close to us will never really understand. On a positive note ,the right person could be just around the corner who'll love you for who you are ❤️
