Smelling Alcohol Pads For Nausea And Also About VNS Therapy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I know it's crazy but a doctor once told me that smelling alcohol pads helps with nausea. I was wondering if it helps you guys. I've tried it and it seems to help. What are your thoughts about smelling alcohol pads for nausea?

For people who have VNS Therapy:
What are your thoughts about it and what are the good things and downsides of it? I'm curious since I'm on three seizure medications and am wondering about getting the VNS Therapy myself.

I never heard of that. I was one of first 1,500 people in the world to get a VNS. Mine was implanted in 1998. It has been a Godsend for me. When I have my "bad days", I just make sure not to leave my house, keep my seizure notebook close by as well as one of my VNS magnets. Today, I was at a friends' house (she was one of the first 1,000 people to get the VNS) and every time I started speaking, my VNS would turn on and interrupt my speaking ability for 45 seconds.

When you have a VNS implant done, you still have to take medications. I was one of the first 1,500 people in the world to get a VNS back in the late 1990's. I've never had my medications lowered. They've been changed, but I've never been off of them.

VNS. Well, I have one. It seemed like a miracle after the first few days it was inserted. Then the petit mals came back. It seems to help a little bit now. I'm almost afraid to have it removed, despite the fact that I still have the seizures. What is SO annoying is that my voice goes hoarse for 30 seconds every 5 minutes. So, it may be helping but I'm not sure. I don't want to lose any progress I've made, if I've made any with it.

Sorry 4 a late comment but a good side is that VNS has any negative effects of the people that I know and of the suggestions of my doctor obviously and one of the bad parts that I would say is that it does give you a little pinch in the throat when you use it but that is supposed to happen to know that it is working and you will get a small cough as well it is effective and it takes only a few seconds to stop a seizure but not completely. Another good side is that if you feel like you're going to have a seizure you could use it anyway you don't have to use it when you have the seizure and also it is constantly working sending electrical brain waves to your head but it is not connected directly to your head which is a good thing it is connected into a vein in your neck and that is weird the electrical shocks are sent to the brain and for now I have not had any negative effects and every few months if you want to and because the doctor likes to check he can also increase the amount of of it the effect because they check it with a like box monitor since it's a small circular box on the side of your chest which is not I would say bad for me because I have been doing great and I have not had as many seizures as before mainly because I have been going down to just clusters and little jerks and now that I have the VNS it is even less that sounds funny to meet VNS less. And it's only a tiny little magnet on your arm that you rub across that box on your chest the VNS I mean.
