VNS
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

A quick ? For those who have a VNS fitted , regardless of whether or not it's been useful .I studied neurology at college as part of my speech ,& languages therapy training so I know the Vagus is the 10th cranial nerve.I don't think I'm a candidate for this implant but I'm interested to know whether it involves general anaesthetic & how long the procedure takes

I have it and I hate it, it was the worst thing I have ever done to myself 🤯😠💔 because of the VNS I now can't get the MRI's for the cancer tumor I have on my brain, and the VNS wouldn't even stop the seizures, then when my Dr saw I had taken the CBD oil he turned off the VNS on me and lied to telling me he was turning it on higher when he actually turned it off, then if I do get the VNS taken out they have to leave the wires that are in the brain in there for good the only thing they can take out is the VNS that's hanging from my shoulder worst of all they won't be able to do any type of test leaving the wires and taking out the magnet I hate all this now not knowing too much about the cancer when it was on level 2, 9 yrs ago thank God he has heard my prayers and still has me here 😢💜💜💜 I don't recommend you or anyone to do it sending prayers to you and everyone here

It takes from beginning to ending about 1hr. to 1 1/2 hrs. depending on the complexity of the surgery. It is done under general antestheia where you are completely asleep. Whenever you come out of surgery you will have a large pad on the left side of your neck and chest. You will come back in 1 week for a follow up after discharge for activation of the VNS Stimulator and once that is done you will be coughing mostly uncontrollably all day long due to the low setting on the VNS Stimulator. You will cough each time the setting on the VNS is set. You will need to swipe your magnet each time you have a seizure. It will take about 4 - 5 times to have your VNS set to a theraputic level for you.

I have one since 2002. You are in and out the same day. Your dr has to go thru procedures to see if you quilify for one first. He told me that if you have gran-mal seizures, it will not help. If your seizures come out of no where with out knowing, it is hard to know if it will help for you will not have time to get the magnet. I have petimal seizures with auras coming on first. My nerve stimulator has a power of 1200 that goes off every 60 seconds. When I have an aura and use my magnet, the power goes to 1500.

I'm on waiting list but I don't know if it will work for me. I'm usually on my own so I have tonic clonic with no warning Epilepsy. I would like to know if you are alone when you had a seizure does the VNS automatically kick in. If not it's no good for me.x
