What Are Symptoms Of Epilepsy Besides Seizures?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter has recently been diagnosed. Im struggling to find any info on other symptoms, especially that aren't caused by medications. Are seizures the only symptom?

It’s a little hard to explain, because every with epilepsy, have a different package that comes with it.

I guess the basic symptoms that most people experience , is trouble with memory, Struggling with balance , feel exhausted or get very tired after the seizures, feel of a foggy/cloudy mind ( can’t think straight ) , trouble talking after the seizures, and stuttering whether we seizured or not. Seizure patterns may change , when change to a different medication, The person may look like he/she is daydreaming, when it’s actually a small seizure. Slow down our motor skills and learning struggles .

Then the symptoms that differ from person to person.......
Someone my become emotional ( cry, yelling, hatred comments and ect )Feels comming out of a seizure . Insomnia, deep sleep ( won’t wake any noise around him/her ) from med side effect . May feel tire through the whole day, even after having good rest ,also from med side Effect. Behavior may change , May vocalize Sounds and words During the seizure. May feel paranoid after the seizures or could be a side effect from the medication. Can be hard to comprehend, Depression, denials,

Then there are many thing out in the would that we struggle. Some are things we are told that we can’t or should not do. Things like driving or Experiencing alcohol, when we reach that Age. She may feel that she lost her independence. We get harassed and criticized . Because Epilepsy has a big stigma around it, people fear to being around us. There there are who believe in the myths . Witches, cursed, possessed, we are contagious and we are feared at. Those are just some Of the myths. Is she going to loose a few of her friends because of her epilepsy?

Trying to find a college, job , work or career might be more difficult than a person who doesn’t have epilepsy. If she does get a job , wIll she have to depend on you driving her? Is there any city transportations near her ? Maybe she can ride a bike or walk if it isn’t far. How about Tolerating the public, if she has a seizure? It could hard to take in , feelings embarrassed , humiliated, many even get her depressed , after feeling many strange eye stair upon her.

We have to think of Epilepsy as a difficult lifestyle. We have find many alternative way to live and get around. Will she keep her Epilepsy a secret or will she be open and talk about it ? If her disorder is going to spiral her down into depression , she too will need some kind of support group. I don’t know where your town or city is located, but if possible find out where the Epilepsy Foundation is from you. Get here into a support group. Maybe try and get her on this site . We all understand what each other are experiencing, because we have or already going through many of similar struggles. Whether it be ourselves, family, friends , coworkers, and friends.

I know this is a lot , but I hope this helps.
