I will be going for an assessment for surgery in 2 weeks. All I know about the surgery my neurologist is suggesting is the awake surgery. What type has other's had and the results. I doubt I would agree to VNS ?.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member. Exactly I say that to everyone I will tell them my experiences and people are stunned because its complicated and people have no idea in the first place.
I have to say I had no idea what was really happening and the hidden auras etc and I worked with seizures all the time until I was diagnosed I'm still confused. The best thing that my Neurologist ever said to me was "Not at all" I asked him many times am I going "crazy" because of all the strange confusing things that I tell him is going on, or my opinions about my cares and that was his answer. It is all validated. I find he doesn't go by the book never has and either does epilepsy. I always ask him things that I direct to him personally e.g. what would he do or would you recommend this for his wife/Kids. I've known him so long as a work mate and my Dr I know he is telling me the truth.
Whether there is some kind of history with him or family member I don't know or am I just lucky
I’m not too sure about the vns either if your not sure about anything don’t do it until you are that’s my opinion anyway x x
I had a brain surgery with good results.
Later I had theVNS . I didn’t get any results.
Good luck! You will be grand. On 24th this month, it will be 16years since my neurosurgery...I wasnt lucky to be able to choose the type of surgery neither the technology wasnt so advanced at that time. My surgery was under general anesthetic and when I woke up I had left side hemiparesis and i was blind from my left eye.
Nowadays, I have a normal life...and I am a Brain Injury Nurse Specialist working in Brain injury unit in Dublin. I just dont work night shifts, I drive a normal car. I do not wear glasses, my left side eye recovered half of my sight, and i just dont see whoever stands on my left side. Even a good recover is possible, we just have to believe that we can do it. Stay strong, you will be ok.
I had a terriable experience with VNS and the doctor had it removed after a year, I had brain surgery but not awake, I'd like to know why the doctor is suggesting it. Sounds kind of interesting, but I read this happened 100yrs or further back trying open surgery, it was interesting. Mine was done 20 yrs ago, it was successful for 13 months only because I was going through loss of my oldest son, horriable divorce and my other son and daughter were seperated from me which broke my heart, and the cause of all the stress caused them to return, but also I had many other complications in my life. I would try again but I'm too old, I've suffered seizures 40yrs. Now my brain is worn down. I teach and educate people about epilepsy at different times, and spoke to students graduating from doctors, but wanted to ask me questions about epilepsy so they would decide to take another 2 yrs of neurology. You know how you feel better than doctors but if I could I would take it, but be sure YOU see how you feel about it, have faith and confidence in this.
my doctor put me on Lamictal XR 5 yrs ago and have had no seizures, when I was on the plain Lamictal for yrs it didn't work
