Cognitive Problems Before And/or After Brain Surgery For Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am possibly considering brain surgery for my seizures. I've seen people on here that mention they have cognitive issues, I've also noticed that many of these same people have also had brain surgery. For those of you that have had brain surgery, did your cognitive issues happen before or after surgery? As in did you go into surgery and come out the same person? Did you go into surgery and come out with some cognitive losses? Did you have some cognitive loss due to the seizures before surgery… read more

If it is the right temporal lobe then you might have short term memory loss, but it should not be to bad on things that you have grown up with. The only problem you would probably have trouble with is crap like what you have to do this day, or just recent things like that. As far as things you are adapted to, that shouldn't be a major issue. For example when I got my left temporal lobe removed, I knew perfectly well who my mom was, I still had my skills of drawing cars, playing basketball, and the drums. But when I tried to remember names of people I had just gotten introduced to, or if it was a new thing I was learning, then that's when the problems where coming up. And that is from getting my entire left temporal lobe taken out. If you are just getting part of it removed, then you should not have as much trouble as I did. I still didn't have to much trouble either way, but it will be a lot better for you.

I had my hippocampus removed 91 weeks ago and have dropped from 12.5 pills to 5.5 pills a day. Every 30 days another half comes off of ny Keppra, so in 2 months ill start taking off 1 of the 2 lamotrigines or something of the 2.5 onfis. Its been a process but very well worth it!!

On top of all the answers I gave I’m missing all my left peripheral vision And it’s difficult to use the left side of my body because of the part of my brain the operated on. Your brain effects your body bro. For anyone who doesn’t believe me ask my parents because I was 10 when I got those surgeries I told you about

I can see why you are wondering all about these things. I know I said that the Dr. told me that I might have no speach after so I didn't go on. Right now I don't take too many seizures. Of course there are always some better and some worse
