Any Advice For Someone Being Evaluated At An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Or EMU For A Week Long Video EEG Who Is Nervous?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm going for a week long video EEG test at my local Epilepsy Monitoring Unit or EMU next week to definitively confirm or disprove my current epilepsy diagnosis because there is some doubt. I'm nervous because I have never done this specific test for this long I have had the standard EEG and a 4 hour long video EEG but not this one. Have any of you done this test before and if so do you have any advice for someone who is nervous about doing it for the first time?

Don't sweat it-really. I went in for a five-day sleep-deprived monitoring session, a year ago, or so. It's a piece of cake. Honestly, the worst thing about it for me was not being able to smoke. Sure, hospital food is nothing to really look forward to, but think of it as a little vacation. Bring a laptop with you and surf the net for four days! Catch up on all the shows on Netflix you started to watch but haven't finished! If the 'Net isn't really your thing (I'm guessing it is because you're here, but if I'm wrong,) bring a book and watch T.V. It'll all be over before you know it!

Seriously-if I had to do all of my tests all over again, this is the one I'd put at the top of my list of tests that I'd be looking forward to! (WADA test would be at the bottom)

I have been through many over the ears. And they want to ween you off of your drugs so they can record the seizures as they happen. That way they can determine what kind of seizures you have. The key is to try stay relax during this uncomfortable time. Otherwise the doctors will not receive accurate readings from the EEG. To help you get through these days try bringing with you a good book, your favorite puzzle and an ipod. Anything to keep your interest off of the testing. If you can do that you can get through the test with ease. Take care and good luck.

i have a lot of eegs. first the nurse hooks your scalp up with sticky stuff. then you are board for that amount. finally the nurse will un hook the sticky stuff and the test is over. the only problem is you cant take a bath during and the smell afterwards. as for the things to do during the eeg, get stuff to do. read, do some tv, video game, anything to passed the time. afterwards (when all is over with) go to the bath and get shampoo with oils in it. get the shampoo multiple times a day.

My husband had one in August. Pretty boring, bring stuff to do and snacks. Several button up shirts and pjs and a comfy blanket and pillow. They had a harness system so he was able to get up and go use the restroom with a nurse standing by the door. Waiting on a seizure is a weird feeling and can get discouraging but keep the faith!

Take plenty of stuff to do. I had mine done the last week of August. Showed nothing. So basically I suffered for nothing. Couldn't get out of the bed, someone had to be in the room with me while used the bathroom on the bedside commode. Only a curtain between me and them. Had to have a harness on to get on the commode. You want to talk about humbling. No bath other than all the important parts. I had never been so happy to leave somewhere in my life. It would have been worth it if it had shown anything.
