Generalised Convulsion? Does This Mean I Don’t Have TLE?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all,

I’m a bit confused (as always lol) So my neurologist has sent my clinic letter and stated that I have epilepsy with focal seizures and generalised convulsions. I know my EEG identifies my focal seizure started in my temporal lobe and I was diagnosed with TLE but doesn’t generalised mean all over the brain.
Thanks in advance.

Another fact to know is that even if you, like I have complex partial (focal) seizures as your primary form of seizures, you can always have full seizures as well. I have both even though complex partial (focal) are the ones that I have the most often.

Do you have grand mall seizures? If so, I believe that’s what generalized convulsions are. TLE means it happens in your temporal lobe. I have primary generalized epilepsy. It affects my whole brain. I have atonic and absence seizures. I hope this helps!!!

Generalized epilepsy is a form of epilepsy characterised by generalised seizures with no apparent cause.[1] Generalized seizures, as opposed to focal seizures, are a type of seizure that impairs consciousness and distorts the electrical activity of the whole or a larger portion of the brain (which can be seen, for example, on electroencephalography, EEG).

Also I would like to add that you should keep a notebook and write down your questions that you have for your dr. Then you can ask him at your next appointment. I do this and write the answers down as well because I do forget a lot of things! This way I can go back and read them when I need to. This has helped me a great deal! I tend to want to ask these questions but then forget to ask him or forget to ask all of them and of course I always seem to remember after the appointment! Lol

Thank you both! You are both ace!! Kimberley, my focal seizures impair consciousness too (but know that is not uncommon so am less worried about that) but grand mals are better controlled now and few and far between. Focals I only realise their happening if someone is talking to me and I have missed something or am Watching something so is harder to know the current frequency.
I just like to be on the same page as he is well educated with epilepsy (he’s a specialist working on the epilepsy service), so sometimes I think I understand, but feel at times a bit overwhelmed by his advice that I don’t quite understand and am unsure we are at a mutual understanding so thanks again both for the explanations! :) 💕

There’s a section in the epilepsy diary they gave me for notes and questions! But thanks so much for the advice!💕💕
