Is There An Epileptic Personality?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I read that there is a belief that epileptics share certain personality traits, more common/recognizable in those with TLE. I started reaerching it because I felt like I saw commonalities and was surprised to see so much research on the subject. I don't think anyone would know better than us. What do you think?

Also, I want to share that a music celebrity reports his epilepsy being WAY helped out from having a seizure bracelet. It legitimized his condition, making it visible, and more credible.I do believe that epileptics I know tended to be docile and thus a target for opportunitists. Our personality type is highly intelligent to the point of seeing things ahead of time.Epilepsy saved me from a nightmare life that had me and my whole town fooled into trusting people. Now I live alone, and I'm happier than ever.

Most of my friends have temporal lobe epilepsy and we all share common issues. The inability to maintain employment, depression, etc.. A lot of us have education and that doesn't seem to make a difference either for employability. I have failed time after time, even when the competencies are there. It's all due to personality issues. That was always the reason for firing. I eventually stopped looking for jobs because the standard excuse was, 'You don't fit in!' A friend and myself eventually found contract work and we were successful getting work this way. We did it for many years.

I found this link comparing the personality traits of two forms of epilepsy.

LyndaWhelan & Others:
Yes, we are all in the same boat.
Some of us know how we got Epilepsy and others don't.
I really doubt there is "an Epilepsy personality"
Having/getting Epilepsy is a tossup~ and a birth defect that doctors can't really
explain about how the disease affects a baby.

My mother and I both suffered from martyr syndrome.Exactly like the letter above said,"didn't fit in". Always got canned for excellent work.I ran a contract business for twelve years, and was illegally drummed out of a town I installed flooring and played every public function in bands.I was outgoing and social, but now I hide at the top floor of the volunteers of America shelter, barely scraping by on the money I earned, and being told that I should work when my rent check is mishandled.Me,my skills, and my seven guitars are working every day on my happiness.
