Would U Rather..
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

This question was brought to my attention recently ..
Would u rather be on a lifetime on anti epileptic drugs or get brain surgery done (if anything was found on mri etc.)

Both have side effects and are life changing in positive and negative ways..
Could u share your experiences with surgery's?
Also those that have tooken aed's for over 30 40 years, did you feel it had a big effect on your life??
Apparently the drug i take (tegratol) is bad long term for the liver..

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member my family likes to research stuff. we (mom, me, and some of my cousins aunts and uncles) are a health nuts. so do your own research on tegratol. i used to take it tegratol but it didnt do anything so drs change to something else.
as for the surgery thing. this is a blessing in disguise because i work at a day care center now and i talk about my seizures and what to do when having a seizure.

When My Dr. brought up the opportunity for a brain surgery , I responded yes right away. Plus I’ve been on the majority of meds out there on the market and none of them have controlled my seizures 100%.

Today my seizures are still not 100% controlled, but since my brain surgery , my seizure frequency went from severe to mild and moderate. So it was overall worth it for me.

i have both (surgery and long term meds). my surgery was worst than the meds just because of the side effects. surgery made 1/2 my body less than the others, one of my arms didnt work, i cant walk good and need a brace to walk. and my talking and thinking is slow. i take keppra (destroys the liver) for about 20-25 years. i also take vitamin 'milk thistle' (boost liver) and vitamin 'turmeric' (boost everything in your body).

After being tested like a lab rat for over ten years, with no succession, I'd opt for brain surgury in an instant.Risks are there yes but it's worth it and better than a lifetime of not knowing what your next AED will make you feel like constantly.. A close friend had successful surgury and is seizure free on no meds.

@SusanLarson,
A lot of people told me my personality was a bit different. With me I was totally helpless having 30-40 partial complex seizures a day and over 5600 mg of meds a day.
For me the surgery eliminated all Partial Complex seizures so yes I was different as I found my independence. There were so many limitations that I had prior to the surgery.
All these doors and windows opened up and eventually one by one I jumped through them. Even the ones that said do not enter. I was 23 at the time so I went through what most teenagers go through. Lol . Hugs to you and you're husband. Please keep us updated. Hugs Wendy
