A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Someone might have already asked - I’ll start with a bit of background

I’m 19 years old, I have been on depo provera (birth control injection) since I was 13, that’s a long time I know but I’m essentially not allowed to come off it because of my seizures around that time of the month.

I’ve discussed with my nurse about coming off it when I finish university (I’ll be 20, turning 21 next July) to try and start trying for babies! I’m in no rush but I know it’s going to take a long time for my… read more

Hi, I started with epilepsy at 13 and have seizures around my cycle. I also was on depo to help control my seizures and am now, as well as medication. I have two healthy children a boy 8 and a girl 3. With my boy he was not planned and i came off the depo and was on Topomax not recommended for pregnancy, obviously i was worried but they kept me on the medication and he was absolutely fine went full term and 6lb 8oz. with my girl she was planned and they put me on keppra a recommended medication and I had placenta previa with the pregnancy in and out of hospital from 20 weeks and she was born at 33 weeks at 4lb. I am back on Topomax now but side effects not good so they have recommended same as you just in case we plan to have another child in future. Hope this info helps and be careful when you come off depo. x

I know that everyone is different; but I too have seizures around my period and was on depo. I went off just fine. I have had two healthy sons. I have not taken that med; but I was medicated throughout both pregnancies. Different meds.

I’ve researched a lot about my medication, it’s generally known as the least risky one and I wouldn’t be able to switch as it’s the only one that’s worked! I have the money and I can plan when I need to, I just don’t do it on a regular basis😂

My mum has already nominated herself as a babysitter as she’s semi-retired now and is showing some excitement about me having a baby whereas she wasn’t before, she’s just got used to the idea that I’m not a kid anymore!😂

I’m fully prepared for what’s coming and have been planning already! Thank you for your input x
