What Are The Side Effects Of Zarontin?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is on Lamotrigine and Zonisamide for absence seizures and that doesn't seem to control them. I was reading about this medicine and was wondering about it.

My daughter is currently on the Zerontin & Phenobarbital plus 6 other seizure meds. They had to keep adding & switching meds to come up with a coctail of 7 seizure meds to stop her abnormal brain wave activities / seizures. They have since added Neurontin. I was told she has stimulation-induced seizures. She is in a LTAC facility. The problem now is they can't get any of the meds off. They tried about 5 weeks ago with taking 3 meds down just a bit, one of which was Phenobarbital. Went well. The next week they took 2 of those 3 meds down a little bit more to 162, again, one of them was Phenobarbital. Within 4 days, she had a blood pressure over 200, a fever of 105.1, & active seizing. She was sent back to UC where the 3 meds were taken back up. It has been a month to let her brain test & 1,week ago, they tried to take the Phenobarbital down to 162 mg 3 times a day. For the past week, the blood pressure is out of wack & fever has returned -- neither as high as when she was sent back to UC. Still very concerning! Her Neurologist has said for now, we can't take the Phenobarbital down any further. My daughter is 48 & this started with a severe asthma attack, cardiac arrest, & put on a vent & teach. She has been weaned off the vent; but, still has the rrach. She had left frontal lobe damage from a car wreck when she was 18 & took Dilantin for several years. She had abnormal brain wave / seizures back then; but, not too bad. After this time, the seizure activity has increased significantly. She's minimally conscious.

I took Zonisamide (ZERONTIN) years ago ago when I was first diagnosed wiih Absence Seizures
at age six~ It was one of the drugs my fiirst Neurologist tried me on to stop them, along with
30MG Valium and I forgot how much Phenobarbitall.
I remember that the Zerontin was a long Orange filled capsule.
Looked like a fish oil capsule~ You couldn'y cut it due to a vile tasting gel inside.

I got really bad ulcers inside my mouth and had to stop it.

My husband just started as an addition to lamictal because he has been having small break through seizures. Hope it helps him without bad side effects like when he was on Keppra.
