Anti Depressants
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone been put on anti depressants because of the side effects of their current medication, has it helped or interfered?

I have been taking an antidepressant when I was officially diagnosed nocturnal epilepsy
So,I take the pill only at night. Does not seem to be inferring with the seizure meds.

I take antidepressants. I have depression and anxiety not related to the seizure meds though. For me they help some. I can certainly tell a difference when I am off of them. As for the types, I've tried several. Right now I am on zoloft. I've been on two different mood stabilizers, both to try to treat the seizures and depression. Didn't help the seizures and seemed to make my depression worse, I felt like a zombie. As for duloxetine, I tried it for a little while, the only side effect I had from it was terrible nightmares. None of the medications I've ever tried for depression seemed to interact poorly with my seizure meds.

My anti-depressants don't I think. However they may add to my tiredness but it is hard to tell. I did choose to go on anti-depressants. I was suicidal when I was 16 and have had lots of cognitive-behavioural therapy over the years. In about 2005 I chose to go onto anti-depressants. Without anti-depressants I go into a deep depression within three days. I feel I am better off on them than without them. I still go to a psychologists for a tune-ups every so often.
