Is It Normal To Completely Forget Something The Day After Having A Gran Mal?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

So, I was talking to this woman who I'm basically in a relationship with. I was completely certain that we'd never done a phone call and it had me concerned. She was certain that we had and wondered why I didn't remember. So, looking back in the recent calls on my phone, I saw that we'd done a phone call last month. But, I'd had 2 gran mals the day before that. So I was wondering why I'd completely forgotten about our phone call.

That is one of the great things about this site it helps you realise that your not the only person who has to deal with a condition while not always being the same can have things in common.

I think it is very common. I get grand mal seizures very seldom but when I do I become very confused and I forget things I have done. I usually can’t remember what day of the week it is and keep thinking I have to get up to go to work and am worried that my manager will be upset that I haven’t called in to say I am not well and won’t be in. Strangely though, since my second brain surgery, every grand mal seizure I have had has either taken place over a weekend or where I have been on leave. My short term memory is not as good as it used to be, especially after my 2nd brain op in 2004. I write things down at work to make sure I don’t forget things people ask me to do. Most times I’m fine but other times I can forget things I did 10 minutes before. Learning to accept that as part of my life and don’t let it worry me or get me down.

I have terrible memories problems. I write down passwords etc. I usually can't remember names either. After a grand mal seizures I have very bad memory for a while - sometimes even prior to the seizure itself. Also medication makes you forgetful too.

Yes, that has happened to me many times, which is why I carry my black "bible" (calendar book) with me every where I go. It is my daily routine to check my book everyday to see yesterdays, today's, and tommorrows's projects of the day. It has helped me soooo much. I refer to is as my bible since so many neighbors see me with it and seem to think that I'm some religious nut. Some of these religious nuts have told me that you and I are possessed by the devil, while others claim to be so jealous since you and I are having private conversations with god every time we have our seizures! The only religious lines that I've heard that do make a little sense regarding epilepsy were some of my buddist martial arts teachers who had many times seen me have seizures. They said that we are the perfect example of what Tai-Chi is. We get our inner energies as in Tai-Chi, but we're getting them while in seizures (uncontrolled). I had taken many years of many martial arts because of my many years of having to hitch-hike sense I can't drive. I had also taken many martial arts because of my many Instructors having seen me have many seizures, and then asked me to leave. But made it just next to black belt, but I don't want my black belt for legal reasons. But, carry a calendar book with you and have medic-alert write-up on page 1! My first word on ALL of my medic-alerts is "POLICE!!!, this is EPILEPSY, NOT DRUGS!!!". They've arrested me several times as a drug user.
