California License
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I would love to speak with someone about their experience getting their license re-instated in California. What the process was the process like for you and did you have any trouble with car insurance?

i am in Indiana but first you need a dr note that said seizure free for your state. then you get the dmv and pass the drivers test. then you drive.

My doctor did not report it to the DMV. My driving allowances were always on the honor system. However, when I completed my renewal form, I had to disclose the epilepsy/loss of consciousness and they would not let me renew. My doctor filled out the appropriate DMV form, after she said it was okay to drive.

Once that was submitted, the DMV responded with a notice that I would have to speak to the DMV Safety Officer. They sent a letter that appointed me a date and time where I had to call in and speak to the Officer. However, I didn't check my mail regularly and almost missed the call! Thankfully, she was understanding of my mail issues. The proceeding was as if you are in court. She determined whether or not I would be allowed to get my license out of suspension- not the doctor.

But you don't just get your license back. You only get a temporary one, which she faxed to me. Then you have to get some letter in the mail that says you are actually ready to have the license renewed. From that, you then have to go to the DMV office and get it done.

Advice- be persistent. Call, call, call. DMV made so many errors and would send me to different people to talk to on the phone. Write down names, numbers and who they want you to talk to. They probably will still put the wrong information into the system. That's what happened to me.

I finally got my license back last year. And now, I just follow my doctor's instructions about driving or not driving.

Hope this helps!

I got my CDL back quite easily but I lied on my application at the counter and told them some story. Then I moved out of state again and again switching licences in each state. Its unethical and I couldn't live that lie after a while. I can drive because I have a license and can easily get a new one in any state. But I shouldn't so I don't. If you want something you can get it. But if you get it you might realize its not what you wanted

My license was suspended for 6 months. When I had my seizure on 12/18/16 my doctor reported it to the DMV. I have no idea if the DMV reported it to my insurance but I didn't and I am in CA. I had to be 6 months seizure free at which time I contacted my doctor's office & asked for the correct form to download from the DMV cuz the stupid DMV gave me the wrong form.

I completed my portion of the form & sent it to my doctor for his portion & he did is portion & mailed it into DMV & then sent me a letter informing me that I would be granted the return of my license & I got my license back about a month later.

Good luck to you.

JoAnn

I don't remember the form number. I'm sorry.
