What To Expect At An Inpatient EEG/Monitoring...
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I head to my inpatient monitoring and EEG next week. I am a mother of two school aged children and a wife to a hard working husband. Not to mention a nurse in a long term care facility that provides restorative/rehab care. The worst part about this inpatient visit is feeling like I am leaving my responsibilities. I'm also so nervous about what will happen. How do you sit in that padded bed for at least five days?? I already have anxiety. I'm super scared. What are your experiences? I… read more

I've been through it twice. It isn't so bad. The first few days they decrease your meds until you are off them completely. Some hospitals will let you be out of be and sit at the chair/recliner that is in the room. I guess it depends on their rules and maybe what kind of seizures you have. They usually let you bring your own clothes and PJ's if you want, just make sure the tops are button up. You can't shower, but you can freshen up at the sink. I'd advise bringing some "rinse free" soap or some body wipes too though. That was the only thing that really bothered me, was not being able to truly shower for 5 days. And bring plenty of things to do because it does get boring. A laptop is great, you have internet, movies/tv shows (I brought a few seasons of my favorite shows on DVD, that helps pass time quickly).

i had every test available. when i went for weeks on end in UOCH in Chicago and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. my tip is mom would make dinners a week in advance and freeze and/or fridge it. the eeg you can move around but your limited. if you have a laptop, tablets, and/or electronics or whatever you want. take um! if you have more than 2 hours of doing nothing, you will get board out of your mind. as for the beds, they are adjustable and they change the bedding every day.
so i covered the kids dinner, the beds, and what you will be doing while you get the eeg. you are gonna be fine fine and before you know it you are done and going home.
good luck and hope it goes well.

I feel for you. I had that done at a well-known hospital in Chicago. I took a week off work. I am a teacher. Are they gradually taking you off your meds to see what seizures you have? They did that to me. My suggestions are to try to have as many visitors family/friends as you can. Bring things to do. Reading material, puzzles, movies. It helps time go by quicker. Best wishes to you:)

It also depends how often you have seizures or how well the meds work. I was off my meds completely for 10 days before the first one happened. Was in the Unit for 21 days and only had 2-3 seizures. If they take you off meds when you get there be prepared to go through some withdrawals. I hope I’m not making it sound bad because in the end you’re going for a good reason. You might be one of the people I was jealous of that had seizures really easily! Good luck🙂

The first 2-3 days are very boring. When they decrease the meds and they get out of your system the seizures will start to fire up. Best of luck to you.
