Vitamins And Memory Loss
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had encephalitis which has left me with epilepsy and short term memory loss. So my question is can taking vitamins help with memory loss?

Memory problems can sometimes happen because of side effects of anti-epileptic medications. Drowsiness, “fogginess”, concentration or attention problems can affect your short-term memory, and may make it more difficult to learn and retain new information. However, no vitamin can change how your temporal lobe has been effected (actively concerned with forming new memories and and storing memories). I have attached a link from the Encephalitis Society regarding memory issues and practical steps in helping deal with it. http://www.encephalitis.info/managing-memory-pr...

I’m seconding b vitamins and fish oils, omega 3 fatty acids (although I hate oily fish!!!!) and vitamin d, you need sunshine for that one. But some seizures just will wipe out some memories whatever you do. The worse my seizure, the more memories go, sometime 3 days either side, sometime just half an hour or so.

I'm 45 and had grand mal seisures since the age of 13. I take Lamicol which controls them but had a seizure last year. My memory has always been horrendous so decided to study and it has helped so much I can't even tell you. I recommend keeping your brain active and you will remember more than you think you could. Xx
