Worried About Having A Seizure In Public
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Soon I have to go to a public event where there will be lots of people. I have to go to this event but I am worried that I might have a seizure during it and spoil it for everyone else. What should I do?

Tell someone nearby or that you’re with that a seizure is possible and to keep an eye on you. I have always told people to please not call an ambulance, everything will be okay. Most importantly relax because stress can trigger a seizure.

You should go. You cannot hide away because of what might happen.
I've had epilepsy since 1968 and I try to live with the condition not fight it.
Go and enjoy yourself.

You should go, don't let the fear of a seizure in public stop you, it would mean you going nowhere. I have had loads in public places but I'm always with someone who knows the signs as I don't know myself and they manage to get me somewhere quiet. Until I started only going out with someone I would bein Asda, on a bus, in Starbucks andi would wake up to paramedics or loads of people but problem was better with my carer or family / friend, they tell staff what's about to happen and not to panic and is much better so now the only place I won't go is on a night out as though they say they don't mind cutting their night short to take me home etc it must do, they can't relax, have a drink in case I have a seizure I don't mind its a small price to pay to be able to go out during the day then carer / friends have the nights free xxx

I agree with the others - unless there’s a safety risk just go and enjoy yourself! Let people know about a potential seizure and give them instructions. I hope it goes well and that you are blessed with a seizure-free event.

As long as I was sitting down, no one would ever know I was having a seizure, while in public.

One day, while on break from work, I went to the mall. I was standing in line at the Broadway Dept. Store, now Macy's, to pay for a purchase. The lady in front of me was wearing a strong musk type of perfume, which cause me to have a seizure and fall. Just as I was getting up, the cashier and customers surrounded me. I explained to them that I had had a seizure, but I was okay. They made a fuzz over it, even though I kept reassuring them that I was fine. I paid and went back to work.

I suggest that you attend the event. Make sure you've taken your medication and do something to calm your nerves, right before the event. have a glass of water near you. Think positive, and psych yourself out of seizures. Have fun and enjoy the event.
