I know this is silly, but I'm worried what the scar will look like. I'm also wondering how much hair they'll shave. You'd think after all this epilepsy struggle vanity is the last thing I should care about...but not a lot of people know I have epilepsy....so the idea of walking around with brain surgery worries me.
I'm seen many different doctors, they all have different opinions, I saw Dr French years ago, she rec VNS and didn't try since didn't want possibility of voice change, my old doctor was mad she suggested it, she never gave me enough time but that could the hospital, my new doctor recommended RNS which I'm getting.
Melissagerson,
This is not a typical minor surgery. It will be a major Neurosurgery.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I saw French at NYU when I first moved here (10 years ago) she didn't give me the best advice and was a bit cold if you ask me.
I've spoken with a doctor at the Mayo Clinic, my doctor, the surgeon (who put in my VNS) that RNS surgery is way more dependable and works. Since the VNS my epilepsy didn't improve. I actually went on an additional medication.
I came upon this thread today. I am 8 days removed from the implant. Was it major surgery? Yes. So was my shoulder replacement. And my knee replacement. I was under general anesthesia for both the bone marker surgery and the implant surgery a week later.
Based on the initial dates in this thread, I doubt that I'm telling the original poster anything new. I'm sharing my experience because it's been very valuable to me to read the experiences of others here.
By the way: I had NO concern about the scar, but am waiting it out at least another week before showing it off to the public as I'd rather not make anybody uncomfortable.
Never said that it was wrong or right. Just stating a fact…😉
