Does Epilepsy Cause Unnatural Fear?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 7 years old and he does not want to sleep by himself or with a sibling. He wants to sleep with my husband and I all the time. I am wondering is this normal or does it have to do with the epilepsy in some way or form. He says he is scared and just can't sleep on his own. This has been happening since he started having seizures in 2015 a little more now. Before seizures he slept on his own without a problem. He does sometimes complain about hearing noises and just about freaks out with… read more

Yes it will, I’m like that as well, but I force myself to stay by myself because there’s nothing they can do when I had seizure so I don’t want they to be worried. Also my one isn’t that serious as other so now I let myself to taking care by myself if I could.

What I can tell you here is what I have before seizure and after seizure (of cause not everyone is the same) just what I experienced, Im scared when I have the symptoms but sometime I could have it for couple week and still not having seizure, when the symptoms come or after seizure I really don’t like noises and scare to be alone because when it too quiet no one around me to hold my hand I’m scare you couldn’t tell which world you in when you got the symptoms of seizure coming so you want some one to be with you and some one you trust to make you unfraid of it.

When people talking in the kitchen and I was in my bedroom I can felt the voice is so loud like it next my ear, and a tinny little sound of close door, knock door or something drop I’m will freak out and my heart beating is getting fast. Hope he will getting better!

I was fine as a child to sleep with tremors but once I got grand mals as an adult now I always have to have my husband with me & even my puppy because they both feel like they protect me from seizures. My puppy knows ahead of time if something is going to happen & my hubby knows what to do so he always makes sure I'm fine.

i was 5 when i had my first seizure. i think he is afraid of having a bad seizure and no one is there. it is somewhat normal. do you have a stuffed animal (a teddy bear or any stuffed aninal)? if not buy a stuffed animal. say that this animal is your security animal. if you get afraid just hold the animal. i have my dog and bear near my room and i still have um and i am 32.

At first I was thinking he was like many other kids . They want that comfort support to help them fall asleep. When you brought up, that this didn’t happen until he got diagnosed, opened up a different can of worms.

There are a few different possibilities of this situation. :

He could be experiencing some kind of aura. This is like a warning sign, that seizures may be coming. People may experience some kind of sensation that’s not there , like Hearing noises , weird feelings on the shin, changes in emotions or behaviors and ect. He may not be understand what he’s experiencing.

Then there’s the after effects of a seizure, that may trigger the the fear. When he has the seizures the brain waves bounces around the brain 🧠 and maybe hitting the fear ( emotions ) part of the brain.

Then there are the medications, that have the side effects of making us have behavioral and emotional changes.

These are the few things off the top of my head. Prayers to your family. Hope you can find the answers your looking for.

Depending on the severity of his seizures, I wouldn't be surprised if it was down to his epilepsy. I have always been alright going to bed on my own, but having a seizure in the middle in of the night (especially if you're waking up mid-seizure) can be frightening. I can still remember the first time I woke up at the end of a grand mal, thinking I was paralysed and not knowing if my eyes were open or shut. That is only my personal experience, though. If your son has a lot of seizures in bed, it may be associated anxiety making him generally restless. For me, that's the kitchen and bathroom.

And it just occurred to me that I've no idea if I've said anything helpful, but I'm out of words.
