Trouble Riding In The Car
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Hi I'm wondering if someone can help me. My son is 19 has autism and is unable to communicate how he feels. He was just diagnosed this year with epilepsy. I realize a seizure is different for everyone but I'm wondering if anyone has trouble in the car. He really freaks out when riding in the car and I'm wondering if this sets off seizures for him. Has anyone else experienced this?

His anxiety and stress about riding in a car could be a trigger for a seizure.

I know some people have anxiety in the car due to meds. & how they feel due to it. Try laying he's seat back or have him read or play on a tablet or something to not pay attention to the road.

Hi Lorriane
I work in disability sector in Australia maybe try a weighted blanket when travelling in the car with your son, here's some information regarding weighted blankets and sensory blankets for traveling

Weighted blankets have long been popular for calming individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Typically the blankets contain metal or plastic beads sewn into quilted layers. The idea is that the weight provides gentle, deep pressure that addresses the sensory-integration issues often associated with ASD.Jul 14, 2014 ( https://www.autismspeaks.org/science/science-ne...)

I have a second cousin who has Autism . But he does very well in the car πŸš—.

Now with your son’s anxiety in the car πŸš™ , can very possibly cause a seizure. His anxiety is similar to being stressed, which is one of the biggest triggers that causes us to seizure.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member i tried everything, including the blanket thing and it did not work. the only thing that did work is 'the keto diet'. before the diet i had seizures every hour. on the diet i had seizures every 2-5 hours. i had surgery and now i have a loosely base keto diet and have an aura at night before bed.
