Has Anyone Ever Dealt With People Blaming You For Your Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

has anyone ever dealt with people blaming you for your epilepsy or saying things like "you better not have a seizure" or "I can't trust you because you'll just have a seizure". I have a family member who is always using my epilepsy against me like it's my fault, or that I do it on purpose. I just wonder if anyone else has dealt with this and how they have dealt with those mean people in peaceful constructive ways.

My family treat me like I'm contagious. If the family is sitting in a certain place or room and I come in and sit or join them. In less than 5 minutes they would all have gotten up and moved to another place without saying a word. Leaving me sitting alone. If I get up and go to where they have gone. A few minutes after I sit where they are it only takes a few minutes and it starts over. So I have learned just to stay where I at and let them be to them selves.

I have that problem with my family all the time. My sister didn't even invite me to her wedding, because she didn't want to chance me "ruining her perfect day." Although I can follow the logic behind that one, it was her wedding after all, it happens with lots of family events. Family get together at the beach? Christmas dinner with family in from out of town? I'm the leper hidden in the closet. Although this isn't true with my whole family, it's just a given if certain family members are running things, my kids are invited, & I'm at home.
After all these years, I've learned to be thankful for it. It's easier to be left out, then to just stand there and listen to the ridiculous things they tell me. I cant tell you how many times I've been told that I just need to go on a juice cleanse, or that it's actually my medication causing my seizures.

Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member. You could be right I probably did have a second hand/contact high. But I didn't panic at anytime during the party. It was also a long time ago too. I was in my twenties and back than marijuana was truly illegal. I also knew many many of the people and had a lot of fun. I did even touch the liquor either. I brought My an drink. Usually some type pop.

I was at a party where there was a lot of drinking and marijuana . Any way they all knew that I didn't smoke or drink or smoke the weed. But many of them would ask if I was HIGH. I said no , in a confused response. My eyes were supposedly were glossy .

I wasn't sure if.........

1. They were imagining things
2. Maybe my meds had a side effect making my eyes look 👀 glossy.
3. Or maybe I had a second hand kind of high and didn't realize it. I was with the big group of people , when they were smoking and passing around the marijuana pipe.
