Benefits And Change Of Circumstances
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi I've been on DLA for 20years and incapacity benefit/ESA (support group) for well over 10 years. Just curious how my benefits would be affected if I was to move out of my house (private let on HB,) to move in with a partner earning a good salary. I don't have children,he has one from his ex partner.

You can still claim your dla, but your esa will stop

Cares allowance comes of your ESA if you have the severe disability premium added on, my SDP was £296 a month added on to my ESA, when my friend started spending so much time doing things for me and claimed Carers Allowance they took £240 off me to give her, if your carer is a partner you live with it wouldn't matter but if your on your own it makes a big difference, the government / DWP don't pay for your carer YOU do.

I don't think it would, you would still get your ESA although if it has additional money topping it up that might go i.e. I have the severe disablement allowance added on mine and you would still get your DLA as that's not means tested, you get that even if your working or a millionaire. You would no longer get your HB or council tax payed. Xx

Thanks all for your replies. I'm not planning on moving anywhere just asking out of curiosity. It's interesting to read people's different replies.

You will still get your DLA or now PIP as it has been called. I would be very wary about moving in with your partner especially if you have a view of getting married. They are assessing everyone on ESA at the moment and many people are losing their benefits regardless of their condition. Awful cuts. I only mentioned the marriage element because if your partner earns over £16,000 per annum you will lose all ESA. Just be careful making any changes at the moment,
