Insomnia And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone have issues when their epilepsy worsens, they also get insomnia? I had a tonic clonic in public the other day (of all places) and several since, out of nowhere... and even though I am exhausted I cannot sleep! When I do it's for a couple of hours. This is horrible! It's happened before I just never made the connection.

Be careful. I'd be looking into insomnia and sleep apnoea and ensuring you are sleeping in the safest position. Fortunately for I have never had insomnia... I know many PWE (people with epilepsy) who have/do. They find mindfulness, meditation, routine, counselling, eating healthily and avoiding certain foods and drinks and all food and drinks a couple of hours before bed, aromatherapy, eye masks, massage etc. Again it depends on your epilepsy and one must be careful of certain aromas- I know lavender can be bad for some PWE. Antidepressants may help. My first thing would be to suggest Natural therapy and Behaviour Management etc. Eg counselling, reviewing your sleep wake cycle, relaxing bed routine to unwind and get your mind, body and soul in a positive, restful sleep mode (Eg. mediation, relaxing sensory music)!!! Good Luck and Good Night Sleeps All The Way!!!!

Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member and @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member - I also found it hard to get a good nights sleep whereas a year ago I slept too much but that was because I'd become toxic on one of my anticonvulsants and I'm very lucky to be almost 17 years seizure free.
I agree TOTALLY with RachH that switching everything off an hour before you want to go to sleep and use 'Mindfulness' - which my sister introduced me to recently (and its amazingly good) and a lovely relaxing low volume relaxing music or simply the sound of running water or waves makes me drift off to sleep much more easily. RachH hit the nail on the head when she replied to you and I hope it worked as well for you as it has for me.
Sleep well Breweewee ;)

I have terrible Insomnia and Sleep Apnea also. I have had Epilepsy my whole life and I would say last 5 years my insomnia has gotten worse. One thing that I have heard helps is not using any electronics an hour before your bedtime. I hope eventually you get a peaceful nights sleep!!!

Benedryl can lower your seizure threshold & melatonin can cause bad dreams for some. Be careful!
