Exhaustion After Seizures
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for recovering after tonic clonic seizures? I had a seizure a week ago and I still feel so tired. My injuries are gradually healing but I only stopped wanting to cry all the time a couple of days ago (crying is common for me after a seizure). How do you guys deal with the tiredness?

I keep a pedilyte drink or gatorade on hand to replace my electrolytes lost during a seizure, and a small pack of p'nut butter for energy for when I wake up after a seizure. This helps me to recover faster, as a standard tonic clonic has the same effect as an 8 hour full body workout.

I can remember when I was young I was tired all the time never could get lots of sleep and I went to bed at 9pm up for 7am for high school and fell asleep on the way there in class and on the way home it did suckI took that pill for close to 40 years befor this. Then I had a call from my doctor that put me on this drug and he asked me why I was taking so much I said that is what you said the drug is phenobarbital at 3 times a day at 120 mg per tablet. I now take the same drug but only 60mg huge difference.. I would tell your doctor that you are sleeping to much and I wish you the best

I don't have tonic / clonics but clusters of focal seizures with/ without impairment These happen for 24 hours each week After wards I feel like I've been in a boxing match but my brain won't let me sleep. ,so I have to get a bit of fresh air/ exercise I know many people can't do this though

The recovery time for me after a tonic-clonic is about a week. That's for the wounds to heal (I have road rash from falling down steps onto an asphalt parking lot on Thursday), the bites on my tongue and cheek, and for my mental clarity to get back to normal. The poor memory is the worst part for me - I like having a mental edge.
