I Am Wondering What Birth Control Is Best For People With Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I heard that some types of birth control is not really good for people with epilepsy because it can affect epilepsy medication. I am currently taking toprimate daily and lorazepam as needed. I wouldn't bother with birth control but it's becoming less of a choice. My monthly cycle is pretty out of hand and has caused me to almost faint twice during two different months, nurses experienced it one of the times. My seizures are pretty well controlled WITH medication. I have had only two grandmals… read more

Thanks everyone! After everyone's advice and talking to the doctors I think I'm going to go with an iud I'm leaning towards mirena. I hope it works out. I really appreciate all the advice and answers!

The Arm Implant is what I did because I did not want to take the pill because I did not feel the pills were safe and I understood the implant was the safest and it last up the 3years and they have one that last up to 5yrs as well an they told me it was 99 present safe and u did not have nothing to worry about the only thing is u may go a couple of months with no period but that is normal for that to happen they said and then u would have one again because that happened to me and then it would start back but when that happened u would just need to call them

I also have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. I have been advised that the Mirena is the best intra-uterine device ( IUD ) to use. Unlike the copper IUD it releases small amounts of hormones that can make your period less severe. It's a little pricey (in South Africa), but apparently worth it :-).

Yeah, it's good to definitely look into all options before deciding right away. They only went over risks with the IUD with me and not the arm implant. I didn't find out about the risks about the arm implant until it was already in my arm and that was from my friend. Partially, my fault because I didn't press my doctors. However, before they went along with it I did ask if it was safe with my epilepsy medication and they had a list of my medications and they said yes. After doing research myself I found out it is not. While it will not cause my epilepsy meds levels to lower or anything like that my epilepsy medications interfere with the birthcontrol and makes it less effective. So, it's not really effective as a birth control. Well, that would have been nice to know upfront when I asked the question and not from my findings. As for the actual reason why I went on birth control, it's kind of early to tell a difference. Today or yesterday would have been the first day on my "regular" period. I had horrible cramps today and my vision started to go a little blurry so I'm waiting it out a little longer.

I looked into it, and decided to get the injections.
