Who To Tell, If And When?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do I err on the side of telling people in my life about my diagnosis, or just stay private about it? I want people to understand why I am now the way I am now, but also don't want to be seen as a whiner with a victim mentality. What has been your experience?

I have always been careful of who I tell. I have been a bit more open recently. I'm a sped teacher and you see epilepsy and seizures with students. I still feel there is a stigma. Too many people are uneducated. I just don't want people to feel I'm incapable of doing my job and in some cases a freak. It's unfortunate. My principal and a few people in my school know. That's it.

I'm careful who I tell regarding my daughters epilepsy now. I respect her wishes who she wants to know including her bio mom who doesn't know. If we end up leaving her a long time with someone ie babysitter I let them know in case she has a big one for the first time.

Its not just so they have a choice, there are friends that will get up and leave you being they know just like your friend only meets you in public places. I hear from people that loss lots of friends after they told there friends I have epilepsy. so be careful what or how you tell them if you do

Tell them so they will have a choice to be with or not. I have one friend she only meets me in public places now, because she witnessed one of them.

It's so common for these repeating yourself issues to come up.. I have learned to laugh at it now when the other person says" ahh you've said that before." Unfortunately some people are always just make assumptions based on dumb things. It's there fault if they decide not to get to know what wonderful person you are!
