Hi
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi am new to this website. I had tried support group in the passed but it didn't work out. I was wondering has anyone else had slight discrimination from previous employment and current. I tend to get ignorant questions asked and one recent thing my manager asked me if it was possible to get a doctors note to say if the doctor could guarantee I won't have anymore seizures. Which at the time made me angry and upset, but now look back and laugh about it.

Jojo that is so wrong people are ignorant. Sending both of you guys hugs. I have had ruff times as well. My old manager many years ago decided to bring it up in a staff meeting I was only 21 at the time. I felt so embarrassed and small. The questions other staff were coming out made me feel even more smaller.

People are so ignorant. I know I've been passed up on so many job opportunities or let go because i was a "liability".

Heel yeah, excuse the expletive; but hell yeah--I have had a job and neglected to tell them right away because I really needed the job. When a disability topic came up in conversation, I jumped in and thought this might be a good time to introduce Mr. Epilepsy. I was "let go" the next day...so yeah, I get it...

Management teams in CA tend to be short-sighted and very competitive. My brain surgery has impacted my memory. Management feels everyone should remember what they say; it's not management's responsibility to write down business policies/procedures. To effectively deal with these issues, my doctor has written a letter to my employer addressing my disability and encumbrances per the ADA laws. I'm not always happy to take these actions but have found this is a fair, equitable method to follow when team leadership is uncompromising.
Wishing you the best
