Anyone Else Suffer With Insomnia?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hate not being able to sleep, unsure if it's my meds or not because as far as I know I've always had insomnia from being a baby. I'm on lamotrigine and keppra. Thanks x

Something to think about is that it might be – Prodromal: prior to a seizure symptom.

My understanding that most people with epilepsy have insomnia. My insomnia coincides with my menstruation with headaches which in turn causes seizures.
See if there is a pattern for you?

Ooo me me me ! Because of it I've become a major NIGHT OWL . I blame some of it on the old way of doing EEG's. I had to stay up for a full 24 hrs. , before my appointment time at the neurologist. I've done it at least 3 different times for sure. On my kid's school days, I stay up until they are on the bus. Then I go to bed.

YES ! 24/7 . I'm alway the last one in bed. On school days I stay up until my kids are off to school. On the weekends I just stay up until my body starts shutting down.

I suffer from insomnia badly, it is common for people with epilepsy to suffer from insomnia. I do not currently take any medication for my epilepsy so it's not a medication side effect for me. I've had insomnia for 15 years now and I have bad spells (which I'm going through now) but I also have some periods where I can sleep with help of medication. I take amitriptline (not sure on spelling) and it works for a week or two then stops for a few months, I go up to 6 nights before I get a migraine through no sleep. Sometimes I can sleep for an hour or two max but that's it. I work in the day and going to work without sleep is a killer. I don't sleep in the day but feel sleepy all day yet come 8 or 9 at night I'm wide awake until time to get up for work. Because of my epilepsy they are reluctant to give sleeping tablets but lack of sleep can also be a major trigger in fits.

Speak to your dr to see if they can find something to help you with sleep as lack of it is awful.
