Epilepsy Diagnosed After Age 60
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Have read that diagnosis of epilepsy after age 60 leads to stroke, alzheimers & /or dementia. Does anyone have experience with the above. Can anyone give me any information about this?

my father in law had epilepsy in his 80;s having had alzheimers since his early 60's. I ask the same question frequently as I have had seizures for 42 years and none of my consultants have said there was any conection.

Some of the symptoms can be similar: partial paralysis, incoherence, etc. I woke up in a hospital once being given a stroke evaluation.

I was checked to see if I had a stroke. But did not. I am wondering if it is a precursor to stroke

My dad and my grandfather were diagnosed late, although my dad died younger than 60. Both of them had seizures as a result of stroke damage.
