3-day Vs. 5-7 Day EEG
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I got a call from my doctor's office today, and even though I had a 3-day EEG in June in Reno, the new doctor in Sacrament wants to admit me to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at her hospital for 5-7 days. Has anyone been in a state of the art epilepsy monitoring unit? Do they do more tests the just the video EEG? I told the nurse the last one was $30,000 and I had to pay part of that.

Here in Minnesota the ABBOT NORTHWESTERN HOSPITAL, has a great Seizure Unit. The entire unit is carpeted. We are recorded 24/7 and are free to roam around the unit. They have a leisure activity and tv room where I can meet others going thru the same thing with VEEG testing. The EEG electrodes are connected to a wire box that is connected to a very long cable cord, that allows us to walk around freely. It's a great experience. The doctors and nurses try to keep us active and move around some. They don't want us stuck in our room all day. Even if we were one of those people did want to leave the room and a nurse would come to the room and make them move around some.

Thank you KatMarron. Happy Thanksgiving, I really hope your doing well.
I had my 5-day EEG this past February and they captured 4 seizures, but it took 2 1/2 days before I had one. They weaned me off of quite a bit of my meds, sleep deprived me (I was awake 80 hours), and I had them give me diet soda to expose me to aspartame. It was not a fun experience, but they found the seizure focus and removed a 3x1 cm piece of my brain in April via laser ablation. So far/so good. Life is not 100% perfect, but better than it was. My insurance did cover it w/ prior authorization.

Just the video EEG

Sometimes they do not get a good read on a 3-5 day. You need to stay in there until they get several seizures on the video.I know people that has stayed 2 weeks. Once they get what they need they can proceed from there. Make sure you find out what your first EEG read.

I have had both. The unit is beautiful and you are in a private room. The EEG and monitoring and blood levels are what are done. They take you off your medications because they want you to have a seizure. They want to be able to see where they are located and the testing helps them to treat you. If you cannot pay for the hospital bill contact the billing office when you receive the bill and explain your income etc. See if they would be willing to write the bill off. The do this for people who cannot afford hospital stays.
