My son has been a poor sleeper since he was about a year and a half. These past 3 weeks have been especially hard for him. He has had a few seizures and really bad insomnia. I know lack of sleep is a trigger for seizures. I am just wondering what I can do to help him. He is only 6 and I do not want to use any more medications than we have to. Melatonin does help him fall asleep but does not keep him asleep. Either does slow release Melatonin. At a loss...we need to get some sleep.
The first thing my doctors ever talked to me about was my sleep hygiene. As a teen, the neurologist I saw refused to put me on any medication to induce sleep because of the fear of causing reliance on it to sleep at an early age.
Now I consume absolutely nothing with caffeine and no sugar after 4pm, have blackout curtains in my bedroom, only use my bedroom for sleep, and don't touch electronics for an hour before bed. Many even recommend white noise machines and temperature control in the bedroom for optimal sleeping comfort.
Yes sleeping pills because no sleep means heaps of seizures.
I have been given Melatonin to help me sleep as the medication i am on has stopped my brain producing the hormone that helps you drift off to sleep.
Hot sleepy time tea..
I take hydroxyzine and it actually works good...which is a miracle for me. It's basically a antihistamine my neuro prescribed for my insomnia which is also a trigger for me. She told me this is completely safe to take when you have epilepsy. If I'm not mistaken it is safe in children too. Hope this helps
