Topiramate
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've tried a few meds, been taking lamotrigine & lacosomide for years with no joy, still have several seizures a month. Neurologist prescribed topiramate today. Does anyone take it? Any side effects? Any success?

My son was on Topomax, and a side effect of it was that he was unable to sweat. Living in Texas in the summer, that is a bad thing. We could not have him outside for more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time in fear of heat exhaustion. This led to him having his Vitamin D deficiency.

Hi
I started topiramate a few months back and at first thought "This isn't bad. Only on the increase I get some side effects" then once I'd got to the dose my neurologist wanted me on which is only 75mg in the morning and 75mg in the evening that's when my problems started. Daily I was having really bad seizures and after the seizures I was having dizzy spells that lasted most of the day. Also the tiredness that came after the seizure (got that with some anyway)
But one thing I will say is everyone is different. My ex wife's partner was put on it for migraine and couldn't stand it after the first increase so give it a go x

Not a problem - I hate coffee. Thank you so much for all of your responses 😀

I take it now, with Lyrica. I have a few breakthrough seizures on the medications. You must drink plenty water and stay away from caffeine.

I take lamotrigine well as topriamate and have been for several years. When I first started taking the two medications together I experienced a tingling feeling in my face and hands, after a month or so that went away.
A fun fact about Topriamate is that it was being researched as a weight loss drug option as well.
